Mexico City Poll on Attitudes to NAFTA, U.S. Security Checks and President Bush

ROCHESTER, NY—January 13, 2004— As President Bush met with Latin American leaders in Mexico this week, a survey in the Greater Mexico City area found that a modest plurality of Mexicans there support NAFTA, but overwhelmingly they think it benefits the U.S. more than Mexico. The poll also finds a large majority opposed to the presence of U.S. security agents in Mexico, and it shows that President Bush is very unpopular in Mexico City.

The survey was conducted by Indemerc Harris Interactive based on telephone interviews with 800 adults in Greater Mexico City conducted on January 8 and 9, 2004. The survey results were weighted to be representative of all adults in Mexico City.

Methodology

These data are some of the results from a survey of 800 telephone surveys to adults 18 and over that were conducted on January 8-9, 2004 in Greater Mexico City by Indemerc Harris Interactive.

In theory, with probability samples of this size, one could say with 95 percent certainty that the results have a statistical precision of plus or minus 4 percentage points of what they would be if the entire Mexico City adult population had been polled with complete accuracy. Unfortunately, there are several other possible sources of error in all polls or surveys that are probably more serious than theoretical calculations of sampling error. They include refusals to be interviewed (non-response), question wording and question order, and weighting. It is impossible to quantify the errors that may result from these factors.
