P.C. AND INTERNET USE CONTINUE TO GROW AT RECORD PACE, ACCORDING TO HARRIS INTERACTIVE SURVEY
P.C. Use at Home Passes 50% Mark, with 90% of Users
Online
Rochester, NY, February 7, 2000—Harris
Interactive (Nasdaq: HPOL), a leading Internet-based market research and polling firm,
announced that growth in the number of Internet users continues to justify its description
as the "fastest growing technology in history."
Data from Harris Interactive surveys show the seemingly
unstoppable growth of both computer and Internet use, from home, from work and from other
locations such as schools or libraries.
Highlights from the survey indicate that P.C. use from
home surpassed the 50% mark, with 90% of users now online, and that almost half of all
adults use a P.C. at work, and 79% of those users are online.
The latest Harris Interactive data based on telephone
surveys of over 2000 adults in December 1999 indicates that:
- The proportion of adults who use a computer at home has surpassed
the 50% mark for the first time. This compares with only 30% of users in early 1996.
- The proportion of all adults who use a computer at work has
reached 47%, compared to 38% in early 1996.
- A total of 69% of all adults use a computer at home, work or at some
other location. This figure is up from 50% in late 1995.
- From a total of 56% of all adults who use the Internet, 46% access the
Internet from home, 37% access the Internet at work and 21% access it from some other
location.
- Three years ago, just over a quarter (27%) of computer users were using
the Internet. Now 81% of computer users go online.

NOTE:
Data is based on a nationwide Harris Poll conducted by telephone with approximately
2,000 adults aged 18 and over.
Survey conducted by Gordon Black, Chairman of Harris Interactive and Humphrey Taylor,
Chairman of The Harris Poll.
Methodology
The most recent data was compiled from surveys conducted
by telephone within the United States between December 2 to 7, and December 9 to 12, 1999,
among a nationwide cross section of adults. Figures for age, sex, race, education, number
of adults and number of voice/telephone lines in the household were weighted where
necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population.
In theory, with a sample of this size, one can say with
95 percent certainty that the results have a statistical precision of plus or minus three
percentage points of what they would be if the entire adult population had been polled
with complete accuracy. Unfortunately, there are several other possible sources of error
in all polls or surveys that are probably more serious than theoretical calculations of
sampling error. They include refusals to be interviewed (non-response), question wording
and question order, interviewer bias, weighting by demographic control data and screening
(e.g., for likely voters). It is impossible to quantify the errors that may result from
these factors, so the words "margin of error" should be avoided when reporting
all survey data.
These statements conform to the principles of disclosure
of the National Council on Public Polls.
